I’ve been traveling to Mexico for more than 30 years and I can tell you honestly that I’ve never had a bad experience at any restaurant anywhere in this beautiful country until I came to Kin Toh. First class food and service are ubiquitous in Mexico, so to have an experience like this is actually shocking to me.
The first encounter at the entrance was a warning sign of what was about to unfold. We were told “yes we understand you made a reservation over a month ago but unfortunately we’re very busy and we don’t have a table for you, so you can wait or pay $50 to go to our bar”.
After I expressed my disappointment multiple times, we were eventually escorted to the restaurant and asked to have a seat by the bar and order drinks while we waited for our table to be ready. After 20mins, still no drinks, and we were then offered to pay either $800 or $600 for a “special NEST table” or we could get a regular table for free.
Our regular table ended up being directly in front of a commercial size air conditioning unit blasting cold air in our faces. Then we were told that on this evening they were not serving the full menu but only a set chef’s selection menu for $300. We asked to be moved to another table. The appetizers arrived. The food was mediocre at best. When we asked why this set menu wasn’t disclosed ahead of time so we could decide to go to another place, we only got blank stares. In fact they didn’t even disclose what the set menu selections were.
After some back and forth with the manager, we decided to skip dinner and go to NU (amazing BTW). To add insult to injury, instead of an apology, we were asked to pay $100 for drinks before we left.
This place is a SCAM and I don’t say this lightly. There are many other amazing options in the area. No need to put up with poor service, attitude and average food for the privilege of taking Instagram photos. So disappointing.
