Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

    The food was inconsistent. The steak got cold because it was served on a cold plate.. The chicken does do come with the feet, which is okay but it does not quite fit the plate and your sleeves will touch it. I am sure it’s done for presentation and also showing freshness I guess but honestly find a bigger plate. The drinks were quite unimpressive. The dessert list is kinda meh, the cheesecake was good but honestly not the best. The decor is ok but they kept the original ceiling and walls from the previous establishment and it’s clashing with the new design. They had nice chandeliers but that didn’t match the modern light fixtures and that in turn didn’t match the exposed ceiling. All in all, the design is just like the food.. a little from this, a little from that.. dying for the Michelin star it will have a hard time getting. My advice is to just skip.. the service was mostly nice except for one person insistent on taking plate with food on it.. and for one waiter hurrying up and hitting the back of my chair consistently..

    Apps came out way too soon after ordering cocktails. Quality of apps were 7 of 10: tuna tartare, baguettes and chicken butter, celery salad, onion tart. Two steak orders were both undercooked, supposed to be medium and medium rare. One sent back and still under but ok. The lamb was very salty- I could barely taste that it was lamb. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. Cocktails were tasty. I think I need to give it another try. I like the space and noise level.

    Mi reserva fue a las 8:30 por lo que se vació muy pronto el restaurante, muy desangelado. Creo que para un restaurante de alta gama, debería de ser más chico y cozy.

    The food was subpar but also to be expected on a prefix (NYE). Service absolutely fantastic. If the kitchen met the service, this would be the best in the business.

    Everything was wonderful. My only disappointment was the initial NYE menu had listed scallops as an entree & it was removed and replaced by a fish dish. Besides that, food, service , ambience, everything was perfect!

    the restaurant is beautiful, the service is fast and polite, the food for 3 on New Year's Eve, the menu was not very tasty and very simple ;(I wouldn't come a second time
