It’s rare for me to leave a negative review, but our experience at Margotto Hawaii was disappointing. I made the reservation 3.5 months in advance, noting it was my partner’s birthday and hoping for something special. We chose the 11-course tasting menu.
The evening started with a long wait in an empty room before a server came over to ask about water. There were no cocktail or wine options offered. Since Margotto promotes itself as a Krug ambassador and I work in wine, I was eager to try a pairing. The server didn’t know much about wine and said the sommelier would stop by—but they never did. By the third course, I had to ask for a glass of champagne and to see the wine list again. By then, a pairing was no longer possible, and two of the four Champagnes by the glass were crossed out.
By the fourth course, we’d asked for the sommelier three times and still hadn’t seen them, despite noticing them visiting every other table. Eventually, the owner took our order but promptly dismissed me with, “We don’t offer American wines,” before I could even open the list. Over the entire meal, the sommelier only stopped by once, and while other tables got beautiful glassware, we were served in thick, short-stemmed glasses.
Later, I ordered wines for both of us, but the server brought the wrong bottles—twice. After pointing out the mistake, the correct wines finally arrived on the third try.
The pacing of the food was off, with one course awkwardly arriving in the middle of our mains and left to sit on the table. By the time I got to it, the egg was overcooked.
Despite noting my partner’s birthday when I booked, nothing was done until the very end. A server brought out a plastic pig on a plate with “Happy Birthday” written in chocolate sauce. It felt rushed and impersonal.
There was leftover truffle that never made it to dessert or was offered to take home. We ended up at a bar after for a cheap beer and better service than we had all night.
TL;DR: Good food, bad service.
