Nekia is an updated version of the prior restaurant in The Holman Hotel, a Hilton partner. After a recent meal there with five friends, just a few weeks after their soft open, we believe that while the staff is still learning the ropes and working out the kinks, Nekia has the potential to be a fine addition to Salem’s dining scene.
While the food was surprisingly well prepared, the menu varied, and the server attentive, we waited over 45 minutes between appetizers and dinner. Then we made the mistake of ordering dessert, which was delicious, but it took over 35 minutes for it to arrive. All told, our meal was nearly 3 hours. The meal itself was of high quality and beautifully plated, but the service delay was unacceptable. The place was not crowded.
The gnocchi was tasty but arrived in squares rather than your typical round gnocchi, the Brussels sprouts and crepes were fantastic, and my salad (really the only option other than steak for those with gluten and dairy allergies) was topped with perfectly cooked chicken thighs. The crème brûlée had a raspberry surprise in the bottom of the deep bowl and my tapioca pudding was an allergy free delight.
We all agreed to return, as despite the slow service from the kitchen, the meal and our servers were a win. In time, hopefully the kitchen team will pull together, work out the kinks, and realize Nekia’s full potential.
