Located in San Francisco’s Design District, Niku Steakhouse is a meat-focused restaurant, highlighting an in-house dry aging program, exclusive cuts of coveted Japanese A5 wagyu with an emphasis on wood fired cooking.

Niku, by the Omakase Restaurant Group, hosts a dining room oriented around a roaring custom binchotan charcoal and wood-fired grill, where guests watch as Executive Chef Dustin Falcon (Lazy Bear, The French Laundry) and his team prepare steaks to perfection. At Niku, there is a true marriage of American and Japanese sensibilities. Falcon’s cooking is driven by the terroir of Northern California — which finds its way onto the menu through foraged ingredients and products from local farmers — met with the highest quality domestic and A5 Japanese Beef.

                                                      This was the worst restaurant we have ever been to. We got there before our reservation and waited 30 min to sit down - waited at the bar that was ‘closed’ and barely got any service. Sat down and waited another 15 min for a server to even come. Ordered all of our food and about an hour later got the bread and a salad. The 2 items we got were terrible and the service was atrocious- I don’t know how this has a Michelin star. We left before the rest of our food was there and thankfully the manager comped the meal but would steer everyone clear of this place.

                                                      This was our second time eating here and again it was great! The food felt unique, made with care and was delicious. The service was great. We’re not big steak people so we like to order a bunch of starters and sides and get a 6oz steak. I recommend this for anyone else who is not big on steak as the sides and starters are very unique and 6oz split between two people is a good portion, the steak is very tender and delicious, again we’re just not big on steak

                                                      It all went well until they rushed us to leave since they had “another reservation” waiting on the table. No one at the entrance waiting while empty tables were available. I still had not finished my wine and it just ruined the experience.

                                                      Service was incredible - and they were so nice to my two kids! Our favorites were the rib eye, short ribs and potatoes. Mushrooms was also great but felt heavy with all the meat (the server warned us) so in hind site we should have gotten a lighter veggie. Portions were generous- we had to take home some of the food. Really enjoyed our first time here and will certainly be back!

                                                      4+ star spot but... -1 star service for bringing the ppl next to us a candle and desert for bday but not our bday girl??? Multiple ppl wished her a happy birthday, I told the hostess and mentioned on reservation so they knew. -1 star food because the Wyagu tasting came out cold. Super tasty tho. Tartare was incredibly delicious, my favorite thing of the night. Usually I'm skittish about eating tartare, but truly amazing. Pigs ears also phenomenal and addictive, never had em before. Definitely a special treat. Broccolini was perfectly cooked, excellent flavor. Strongly recommend them all. Bar is beautiful, overall ambiance solid and perfect noise level for me. Generally impeccable service aside from the MAJOR oversight.

                                                      It’s for my son’s bday. Environment is nice, Love the service, the staff will explain the menu well. Food are good as expected. Good portion! They even gave my son a handwritten birthday card!!

                                                      The food and drinks are amazing at Niku! We really enjoyed our steaks, the pig ears, and all of the sides. The cocktails were very good and the bartenders were extremely friendly. We sat at the bar because our table wasn’t quite ready and the bartenders gave us some good recommendations from the menu. There are a few improvements needed. First, our service could have been much better. Our server had long gray hair and he was nice. His speeches felt canned and he rushed us through service. I was upset that he was making me order my glass of wine for the steak when our appetizer had just come out and I was only half way through my first drink. Never fun to have a wine that doesn’t need to breathe sit out in it’s glass during the dinner. He was often not paying attention to us, so we would often get the things we needed from a nice other server who was a delight. When dessert came, we were disappointed by the apple dessert. It tasted bland and definitely had no hint of apple. For the price, there were needed improvements, but overall a nice experience.

                                                      We decided to dine at Niku for NYE and was surprised that there wasn’t a pre-fix or special menu. There wasn’t appealing music to set the ambiance either. We’ve dined at several Michelin restaurants that offered this for NYE. The wait staff was impeccable and did upsell when feasible. I wasn’t too impressed with the NY Strip steak however; the Wagyu was tender and literally melted in my mouth. The sides were underwhelming with the exception of the broccolini. I personally felt at their prices the food and ambiance could have been better.
