I have used this restaurant for 30+ years and, through my business, sent hundreds of visitors to Dublin to dine there. I found it an excellent establishment until standards started to slip two, or maybe three years ago. I'm unsure if the management changed or what happened, but it's not the same place I used to visit regularly.
To enter a restaurant and have bottles of wine on the table with handwritten signs saying only "100 Euro" must be almost unique. I like a bottle of wine with dinner and I don't mind paying a bit more for as decent bottle, but trying to talk guests into 100 Euro bottles of wine is a bit much. Also on the tables were bottles of wine at the "bargain" price of only 65 Euro ! I have never been in any restaurant anywhere in the world that puts wine on the tables like this; the fact that the prices are significantly above average is to me unacceptable. I have to assume they are trying to convince visitors the wine offers great value ??
For my second successive visit, I ordered a porterhouse steak and was served a fatty piece of beef that was not of the standard you would expect in even an average pub/restaurant; so bad the steak knife was incapable of cutting through it. There are very many good restaurants in Dublin (many a short distance from this one) offering great service and food a reasonable prices. This place needs to look after their customers. The last time I thought it was just a bad night and didn't bother too much as I knew the standards of the restaurant. However, for it to happen again, for the second successive visit, leaves me wondering where on earth they get the beef from.
Not so long ago, you had to book tables well in advance at this restaurant to guarantee a table as it was packed every night at weekends in particular. On my most recent visit, on a busy Saturday evening, there was nobody else dining. I wonder why ???
