Omakai Sushi is nestled in the historic downtown San Jose, one block away from the art walk. The restaurant includes a spacious cocktail bar, sushi bar where you can have an amazing Omakase experience , and an outdoor patio area by the fountain. Open for lunch & dinner, starting at 3:00 pm until 11:00pm. The menu features abundant nigiri and sashimi selections starting with local tuna, white fish, toro, salmon belly with truffle, uni ,Omakase or tasting menus, offer a memorable opportunity to savor the restaurant’s many distinctive flavors.

While the food was delicious and the ambience is beautiful, I was disappointed by the unorganized service. Was not quite sure who our server was and had to repeat things when other people stop by the table. Once we were done eating nobody checked in to see if we wanted dessert or one more drink. A missed opportunity. For all of us. Finally asked for the bill after about 30 minutes and slipped out of there without anyone noticing.

OMAKAI was excellent. The quality of the fish was sublime. The gyoza stuffed with pork belly....delicious. We are big sashimi eaters, so the chefs choice sashimi, 5 fish, three pieces each was a great choice. The toro melted in your mouth. I had a hand roll, unagi with foie gras, also excellent. All the flavors came through on each bite. We had no room for desert, but since we'll be back I wasn't worried that I missed anything. The owner was very attentive and the service was excellent. It wasn't cheap, but what is these days. It wasn't anymore than I expected and we ate a good amount. Kudos to the kitchen, job well done. In San Jose, don't miss this fine dining experience

Our overall experience was amazing, the lighting was perfect, noise level low, great music. The waiters recommendations on the sakatini was nice. Very fresh nigiri sushi, especially the otoro, the Alaskan Salmon, and the unagi. Overall we had a lovely experience eating in the courtyard . We are definitely planning on visiting again.

We sat at the tepanaki table, I thought I had booked regular table so that was minor disappointment. However, sushi we ordered was deicious. We would come back. I would just make sure that I had a regular table.

This was a really good meal, and some of the best sushi I have ever had. I think this restaurant is really close to stepping up to the next level of getting one star, but it’s that last step that I noticed the most as a dinner. 1. Pacing: We were sat and waited for what seemed like a very long time to begin the service. It felt a little like they were surprised to see us even though we had made reservations. 2. Restaurant layout: we did the Omakase experience which is a chef’s table style seating arrangement. The room was beautiful and felt very authentically Japanese. But the problem is that the rest of the restaurant who is ordering off the menu, the server is coming in and out all night running plates. I love the behind the scene feel of a chef’s table but it seems like this layout of the servers interrupting the tasting menu kind of broke the “spell” of what the restaurant was going for. I think just adding a pass window for the servers through the kitchen would help. 3. Pushing Boundaries: The menu felt very safe and created to satisfy the typical American customer ( I am one). If they want to push to the next level and get a star they need to push the diners. Make me try things outside of my comfort level because that is how I learn to love new food. I think there is really a special opportunity to investigate where Sushi meats Mexican Cuisine and create something authentic and delicious. All in all, this is a great sushi restaurant and you will not be disappointed. It feels like given some more time and some tweaks I look forward to returning when they have received their first star!

From the moment you walk in, you’re in a happy place! Beautiful decor and vibe, absolutely amazing food (we enjoyed the 20 course omakase and had soooo many favorites in it) and truly kind and wonderful staff- every one of them. Really wish this restaurant were in the Bay Area so I could go back more often!!!!

From the moment we entered Omakai we just knew we were going to have a fabulous evening and dinner. The welcoming we received and the ambience set the mood immediately. And the rest did not disappoint. To begin with the service was spot on and knowledge of menu and libations made our selections for the evening perfection. The menu was interesting which made our selections harder because we wanted everything. The crispy rice cakes with fatty tuna tartare melted in your mouth. It was so good we had a second one for dessert. LOL. All of the fish was as fresh as if it just came off the boat. My husband and I have dined in many sushi restaurants around the world and Omakai ranks among the best.

The most amazing sushi experience of our life. We went with the omakase and each course was outstanding. Chef Michel is a true artist and the pride he puts into each item truly shows. The restaurant itself is stunning and the service was excellent. Cannot recommend this place enough.
