Ozumo is one of San Francisco’s most popular destinations for contemporary Japanese cuisine. Created in 2001, Ozumo was one of the first restaurants to combine sushi and robata cooking under one roof. We spent $250 with no alcohol for two. We expected a very cool, upscale ambience and experience. The base interior is very old and worn and tired, but has been beautifully remodeled in front. Unfortunately most of the seating is in a large room in back that feels like a low to mid-end cafeteria. The food was very uneven, often with heavy overpowering sauces. In particular, the tempura was soggy and poorly done.

Ozumo has become our favorite sushi destination in the City. And we absolutely love sitting at the sushi counter and seeing Pimchanok and George. They always take great care of us and provides the best service. Love Ozumo!

Ozumo, located in the heart of San Francisco, promises a modern, elevated take on traditional Japanese cuisine. On a recent visit, my wife and I were eager to see what all the buzz was about. While the food and service were outstanding, there were a few hiccups that slightly impacted the experience. We arrived with a reservation, but the front desk offered us seating in the bar area. It wasn’t clear that the main dining area, where the rest of the guests were seated, was located in the back. The bar area could have been a pleasant choice under different circumstances, but we quickly realized that every time the door opened, a cold breeze rushed in. While I could shrug it off, my wife found it uncomfortable, and it did detract from the experience. That said, the service was top-notch. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made great drink recommendations, although I’d advise against the tequila-based cocktail we tried. It simply didn’t hit the mark and felt out of place in a restaurant known for its expert handling of Japanese ingredients and flavors. Stick with their more classic options — those were spot on. As for the food, it truly shone. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented from the sushi to the steak. The quality of the fish was impeccable, and the variety on the menu kept us coming back for more bites with each course. If you're a fan of Japanese cuisine with a modern twist, Ozumo delivers. Overall, while the service and food were excellent, the seating in the bar area was less than ideal. If you can, request a table in the back room, away from the drafts. Despite the minor discomfort, I’d still recommend Ozumo for anyone looking for a refined dining experience in San Francisco.
