We recently dined at Papi's in London, Ontario to celebrate birthday and it was a first time, and while the food was absolutely delicious, my experience was unfortunately marred by a disappointing oversight regarding a surprise for my fiancé.
Let’s start with the positives: the food was fantastic. We ordered Mac N Cheese and French Onion Soup for starters and entrees: Pan Seared Halibut and medium rare Tomahawk but served us medium.
Every dish we ordered was flavorful though and beautifully presented. The atmosphere was cozy, and the service was friendly, which made for an enjoyable dining experience overall
However, where the experience fell short was in the handling of a special request. I had specifically called ahead to arrange a surprise birthday cake for my fiancé, asking that they bring out a cake with a "Happy Birthday" message and a candle to make the moment extra special right after our entree. They don't have to ask us if we want dessert or what not as I told them ahead of time. Over the phone, the staff reassured me that they would follow through with this request, ensuring that it would be a surprise presented at the right moment.
Unfortunately, this did not happen. When we finished our meal, there was no cake, no candle, and no birthday greeting. It was a small detail, but one that meant a lot to me, especially when I had gone out of my way to make the occasion memorable. It was a little upsetting, considering the price and reputation of the restaurant.
In a place where you expect high service and attention to detail, such oversights can leave a negative impression. While the food and service were great, the failure to follow through on this promise certainly put a damper on an otherwise wonderful evening.
I hope Papi's can improve in this area, as it’s the little things that truly elevate a dining experience. Still, I would return for the food, though I’ll be more cautious when it comes to any special requests.
