We arrived in Twillingate this evening, and asked our hostess at our B&B for a restaurant recommendation nearby. She said that we'd be assured a fine meal at Pier 39, and we're very happy we listened to her advice. We interacted with several of the staff at the restaurant, each of whom was more helpful, friendly and attentive than the next. We both ordered the jumbo shrimp in a tomato brandy cream sauce over pasta, which was so wonderfully flavorful we couldn't help remarking several times during dinner how much we were enjoying it. We arrived quite late, and were told in advance that they were out of the salad that normally came with it. We didn't mind, and ordered it anyway, since we were sure that the shrimp would be more than enough for us (it was indeed PLENTY of food). The hostess (who we're pretty sure was the owner) surprised us with a plate of baked garlic shrimp to share as a substitute for the salad. It was awesome, too. We came away stuffed, and totally satisfied. We've only been here visiting Newfoundland for a few days so far, and heard all the stories about how friendly and welcoming everyone is here. Our visit to Pier 39 reinforced the few experiences we've already had with other Newfoundlanders, making us feel welcome the minute we walked in the door. It was a great dining experience, worthy of a repeat performance, so we'll try to go back again before we leave town.
