So look, I gave it 5-stars because it is, in fact, worth 5-stars, and anything less would be an insult to the A-game these guys are bringing... But...
In the battle of "great NY steakhouses" it's an average contender. But of course, that is still saying a lot.
Some interesting things that stand out--
1. We waited a full 90 minutes... that's an hour and a half... for the waiter to come take our order. NOW... that said, they came immediately when we beckoned. We were in deep and fantastic conversation over our cocktails and I was in no hurry, and appreciated that nobody interrupted us until called for, but one of my buddies was extremely annoyed that nobody came by to ask if we might be hungry (he was!), and would we like to order? What's your call on it?
On the other side of this, we talked for another hour after dessert was cleared and never felt any push to leave the table as the restaurant emptied around us. I think it was good!
2. The by-the-glass program is awful. An insult to the name of great steak house. You can get one Cali pinot, one malbec, one Chianti, one Rioja, one Napa cab. No Bordeaux, no Burgundy, no zin, no Rhone, no Brunello, no Borolo... Really fellas?
That said because there were 4 of us, we got a bottle, so no problem. But if I were just out with my wife, this would have really irked me. And it's extra weird because...
3. The som, I wish I remembered his name for the review, was an absolute gem. He was charming, passionate about the wine, deeply knowledgeable about the list and the story of every maker and vintage, and guided us to an excellent Brunello that wasn't on the list. You NEED a guy like this at a world class steak house and he added to the experience of the night.
