My wife and I went to Punta Cana to celebrate not only her birthday (although it was one week earlier) but more importantly, her pregnancy, with one last vacation as she is set to give birth soon. There is no option for this on OpenTable, but being that this was our last night, we decided to spend it at one of, if not the best-rated restaurant: La Yola.
With high expectations, we made the 45-minute trip from our hotel in Bavaro to catch a sunset dinner. When the hostess walked us over to our "special" table after checking in, she asked if it was our anniversary. I explained that it wasn't quite our anniversary but we were in fact celebrating something perhaps more important. She seemed shocked and advised me that she could not sit us at this table anymore and moved us to another. At first, I paid no mind to the change until I realized that the restaurant only had a handful of other tables with guests, where allowing us to sit at our originally intended seats would have made no difference to the restaurant while still allowing us to celebrate our last night in a memorable way. In fact, a party of three sat at said table once the decorations were removed about half an hour later, without celebrations.
While the food was worthy of a "last-night dinner", it was overshadowed by this negative encounter, resulting in us ordering less than anticipated to leave sooner. Furthermore, in a location with limited cellular service, our Uber driver had inaccurate GPS directions and conflicts getting through the property gate. We did not enter our cab until over an hour after dinner. Though not the restaurant's fault, the same hostess did not make the situation easier by giving A PREGNANT WOMAN a hard time, offering little to no support or empathy to save the night.
All in all, we had hoped for a better experience on our last night. As much as I would like to give La Yola a second chance, it will be hard to get this memory out of our head. Please do better for clients.
