Overall, unfortunately pretty underwhelming. Granted, I had got myself pretty excited after looking at their website and Instagram, so my expectations were high, and the food was cooked pretty well, but for a smoke shack, it was distinctly lacking in smoked flavour throughout the meal, and for the price, you can’t help but feel a little hard done by.
There was 2 of us and we shared the ‘Sharing Starter Platter (£28)’ to start, which was nice enough, but the 4 ‘smoked’ pork belly bites and the 3 ‘smoked’ chicken wings were deep fried, so you couldn’t taste any smoked flavour, and they only had a light drizzle of sauce, so lacking in flavour. The 2 sticky fried ribs, however, were the best item on there and very tasty, although lukewarm for fried ribs. The 3 hush puppies were nice, but didn’t really do much for me.
For the main, we shared ‘The King’s Taster (£60)’, which did not meet my expectations. There were 2 slices of ‘smoked’ brisket, which were severely lacking in flavour and were watery, 2 ‘super thick’ pork ribs, which didn’t have much meat on as the name suggests, a small pile of pulled pork, again lacking in flavour, 2 smoked chicken thighs, which were nice, and the best item on there was the gourmet boar and pork smoked sausage, which was delicious and smoky. To be honest, I appreciate the work that goes into smoking the meat etc, but I expected feast for £60.
Also, we ordered the mac n cheese and fries for sides, and the mac n cheese was not proper mac n cheese as seen on their instagram, but more like cheese and pasta mixed with a bit of cream.
I didn’t think I’d be writing a review like this when I first turned up but after the underwhelming meal and a bill of £128 (including £12 booking fee, drinks, service charge and VAT) for 2 of us, I can’t help be feel it’s justified, which is sad, because I thought we had found a real gem.
