The name of the restaurant is inspired by the Legend of Janare of Benevento. Strega means ‘witch’ in Italian and Benevento is considered the “city of witches”.
At Strega, our mission is to transport our guests to the Italy we cherish. Drawing inspiration from traditions across the Italian peninsula, we are dedicated to crafting an authentic Italian experience. With a profound appreciation and understanding of Italy’s rich history and culinary heritage, we prioritize using imported Italian products and are committed to maintaining authenticity in our recipes and menu selections.
At Strega, we believe that cooking with seasonal, authentic ingredients means there is not need for unnecessary embellishment - our food tastes great, is fresh, and at its peak. Our experience is crafted through a series of selected choices. We take pride in serving freshly made dishes, embracing wholesome Italian cooking with fresh and healthy ingredients.
We look forward to serving downtown New Haven.

We had an amazing meal last evening for my birthday dinner. This was our second time here. We did the 5 course tasting menu and it was amazing. My husband has celiacs and they had no problem accommodating gluten free. The servings were more than enough food. The platings were beautiful. The service was impeccable. Highly recommend.

Absolutely delicious food and a beautiful atmosphere. I was in town with a friend and we wanted something other than pizza! Everything on the menu looked so good we didn't want to make decisions so we got the chefs tasting menu - it was 5 courses of authentic Italian food! We left full and happy. The service was spectacular- the owner explained every dish with such passion that you could feel the love. If you are looking to impress a date or eat like you are in Italy (without the flight!) Then look no further. You must go!

Incredible dining experience. Some of the best food I’ve ever had! Pulpo was cooked to perfection and the duck was unbelievable.

Absolutely loved this place. Owner was super nice and very knowledgeable on wines and whiskey. We had the gnocchi and the mahi mahi it was the best we’ve ever had !!! This restaurant has our highest recommendation!! Thank you Danilo !! We will be back.

The wait staff were wonderful as was the opening cocktail and bread! The place is very tastefully decorated, great ambiance. The meals themselves were good but overly salted. Considering the price I would have thought the orzo and vegetable meal would have been more interesting and substantial. The gnocchi were very good and plentiful.

Amazing meals and wine, fantastic service and recommendations. Unique and interesting spin on foods. The gnocchi was outstanding - the best I've ever had. The stuffed calamari was a burst of different flavors and textures. My 12 year old, extremely picky son requested to come here after a birthday visit for dad. He said it's the best pasta he's had since our visit to Italy in April. The staff very graciously accommodated his request for plain fettuccine with olive oil and parm on our first visit. Upon our second visit, they went above and beyond, making him an alfredo sauce that was to die for. Wonderful restaurant, attentive staff! We'll be back!

We’ve eaten at Strega Milford many times and are never disappointed, so our expectations were high for the New Haven location and they were far exceeded. The food was outstanding. The duck was the best duck I’ve ever had. The Cuttlefish Fettuccine was so delicious and the Ziti Ragú was so hearty and flavorful. Danilo was an excellent host from start to finish and helped us select an excellent bottle of wine from their extensive list. Can’t wait to return!
