Designed by Rockwell Group, TAO Downtown offers a distinct sense of arrival and discovery and is the first TAO venue where guests descend into a multi-level space. The subterranean restaurant, located in the heart of Chelsea, is intended to look and feel as if it has been there for decades and only unearthed recently to reveal the artifacts within. Upon arrival, guests immediately encounter a long corridor with a dragon scale patterned screen and Chinese calligraphy murals mounted on weathered brick walls.

    I had initially booked Uptown however we decided at the eleventh hour to change to Downtown with no issues. Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendly doormen and ushered through the doors to the reception point. We were seated pretty quickly and my Bestfriend was presented with a birthday card from Tao which I thought was a lovely touch, considering I had booked last min. The food came out pretty quickly and the portions were huge! The Orange Chicken is a MUST!! My friend was also presented with a birthday platter on the house which again I’m so grateful for as my booking was last min. We loved every min of it and will be bk.

    I love Tao. One of my favorite restaurants hands down. I was happy I was about to come to the New York location. I love the LA location.

    We brought there our friend to celebrate her 60. The place indeed matched her personality - pompous and grander. The food was delicious and portions very sufficient. Wine was on expensive side with just few less than $80 per bottle. We came at the 5 pm opening and it was pleasantly quiet to conduct normal conversation. By 7 pm it filled up with crowd and music got on, so it became very noisy. As waiter explained that was "warm up" for the night club in neighboring room. You also could spot young ladies running in very reveling clothes. Overall, very funky place and experience that served our purpose. I would recommend it for entourage and special occasion.

    They do not comply with the reservation schedule, we waited almost 2 hours to be seated at a table that we had already reserved in advance.
