This was our first visit to the Black Bull Inn. We had booked an Open Table for two about 2 months previously for a birthday celebration on a Saturday at 6 pm. We arrived ten minutes early only to find all the car parking spaces at the front and back of the building were occupied, so country roadside parking was necessary.
Friends had strongly recommended the Black Bull, but reading recent negative online recommendations just before leaving home, particularly relating to poor/slow service, put a question mark in our minds, added to when we found a full car park indicating a popular and busy pub so early on a Saturday evening.
The place was busy and became busier during our stay. We were shown to our table in the Library Room. Our drinks order was taken very quickly and arrived within five minutes. We chose our meals (starters and mains) from the A la Carte menu. Although we didn’t monitor how long it took to bring the starters and main meals, considering how busy the place was, we did not have a long wait.
The food was excellent, and for me, the fillet steak was cooked to perfection and the tastiest that I have eaten for very many years. From this experience, it deserves at least a four and a half star rating for hospitality, ambience, quality of service, food and cooking. Although it is a fourteen-mile drive from home, would we go again? Most definitely, yes.
