We had booked a table for two, for 8pm on Wednesday 18th December. At 8.10pm we had still not been shown to our table, and for some reason a party who came in after us were offered an upgrade from counter/bar seating to a table, and were shown through. My husband gently reminded the greeting staff that we had in fact reserved a table for 8.00pm, and it was now 8.10pm. From her response, it seemed clear that there was no table prepared for us, and we were subsequently rushed through to a table. The table in question was situated in a very dark area, away from what appeared to be the more ambient area of the restaurant with its tablecloths and lights on the tables. The table next to us had visibly not been cleared of crumbs etc from the previous diners.
We were handed the menus, and the area in which we were seated was so dark that we were unable to read the menu. The waiter's response to this was to activate the torch on his mobile phone and shine it over the menu to enable us to read it!
To make matters worse, from where we were sitting, we could observe other diners in a lovely part of the restaurant as previously mentioned, with white tablecloths and lights on the tables.
Moving on, the starter I ordered was a different dish entirely which was replaced with the correct but cold dish. My husband ordered the prawn cocktail which seemed to be partially frozen with a very strong taste of vinegar. My lobster linguine main course was dry and inedible. I would just like to stress at this point that we are not the kind of people who make a habit of complaining. Quite the opposite in fact, I generally make a point of thanking and complimenting in restaurants.
In summary, I feel that we were very badly let down and had really been looking forward to dining at The Ivy and felt privileged that we had even managed to secure a table at this time of year.
