African and Sudanese cuisine is a rising star in Edinburgh, especially among the hungry and switched-on in Southside’s studentville. No wonder then that Nile Valley Cafe’s Chapel Street location is the place where many University of Edinburgh types converge come lunchtime, all looking for a great value food fix bursting with flavourful, colourful, and healthy ingredients. The Sudanese wraps are undoubtedly the most popular item on the menu here, but there are a range of African delicacies on the menu to choose from – soups, salads and stews figure large, but also sweet Sudanese desserts. A polyglot cuisine, Sudanese food has absorbed centuries of influence from the Arab world, the Ottoman Empire, and Levantine, Egyptian, Yemeni, Indian, and Ethiopian traditions – a very pleasurable blend indeed, and one worthy of an exploration. Just don’t forget the traditional strong, sweet and cinnamon-spiced coffee!
2 minutes walk from closest bus stops on Potterrow and Chapel Street. Bus number: 41, 42, 67.

This was our first visit to the Nile Valley Cafe, chosen as we wanted to try something difference and as we had concert tickets nearby. I had booked a table via Toptable at 5pm only to arrive at the restaurant to find that it didn't open until 6 pm. It was therefore a bit of a rush to get to the concert on time. The small restaurant was buzzing by 6.15 pm which shows how popular it is. The staff were friendly, the menu had a good selection of meat and vegetarian dishes and the food was really tasty. We particularly enjoyed the falafel. Added bonus of BYOB with no corkage charge makes it a very reasonably priced meal out. We will defnitely be back to enjoy the food at a more leisurely pace.
