As a lifelong Texan that has recently moved to Alberta, I was craving some authentic Mexican (well, "Tex-Mex" is my love language) food after a few months of missing it terribly. We actually tried to dine at La Patrona, but they don't accept parties of more than 4 which I was really disappointed about as we are a family of 5. We tried The Other Place instead. We started off with the guacamole - which to my experienced palate tasted like it was made with avocados that weren't ripe yet (you could tell by the yellow color of the guacamole) and it seemed they tried to mask this by adding an excessive amount of lime juice. It left much to be desired. Also, as a Texan, I was disappointed that 'chips and salsa' weren't included at the beginning of the meal. This is standard at any Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurant in Texas! We also were very disappointed with the quality and taste of the "strawberry margaritas". We tried a frozen margarita, which tasted super watered down, and I honestly could not taste any alcohol in the single or the double that we ordered. The restaurant did kindly honor our request to re-make the margaritas as "on the rocks" and while they did taste better than the frozen margaritas, they were still nowhere near the quality, flavor, or strength of any margarita you'll find in a Texas Mexican restaurant. The tacos were easily the best part of the meal - the Campechano TOP tacos were excellent and full of flavor. Our children were also very happy with the cheese pizza that they shared. Perhaps this restaurant caters to local tastebuds, which is why the guacamole and margaritas left much to be desired. Overall, as a Tex-Mex connoisseur, I will have to continue my quest to find something comparable in the Sherwood Park area, as this missed the mark for me.
