Very attentive and charming staff who made us feel at ease and welcome.
We had the dining area almost to ourselves and the food and drink came quickly as a result. The portions were generous.
The menu had items suitable for vegans - it was good to see several options on the menu for people with specific dietary requirements.
To improve the experience in future, fresh ingredients (e.g. in the seafood linguine, which seemed to be from frozen) would be preferable, but given the current circumstances post-lockdown and at the end of the main summer holiday season, the lack of fresh ingredients is understandable.
The pub is on the opposite side of the hotel lobby from the restaurant and seemed much cosier, due to the warmer lighting, unobstructed windows and general unfussy decor. The restaurant where we ate was by comparison quite ‘cold’ (not in ambient temperature but in feel) with a very blue palette of decoration and finishes, and with the blinds and thick curtains half covering the windows. Making more of the available sunlight or adding some attractive internal lighting would make a welcome difference here.
The procedure for paying for the meal should be reviewed. I’m sure it made practical sense to collect card payments in the bar, but it felt quite odd in a world where we are so used to serving staff also being able to collect payments.
All in all, I would expect any diners to enjoy a simple, square meal, which might not be the paragon of English cuisine, but will certainly satiate any hunger in an attentive environment.
