Zio Peppe is where tradition meets innovation, serious collides with playful, and gourmet converges with casual. Zio Peppe means “Uncle Joe’ in Italian, and just like a beloved “funcle” – a fun uncle, Zio Peppe will make sure all are welcome, and everybody is having a good time.

Zio Peppe is a collaboration between Chef Devon Sanner and Chef Mat Cable. Our menu is anchored in Italian-American classics of pizza and pasta, but draws heavy influence from the foods and flavor profiles of Tucson and the Sonoran region.

Sanner joins forces with Cable after having cooked under Tucson culinary legend Janos Wilder for the past 15 years, serving as chef at Janos, JBAR, Downtown + Cocktails, and The Carriage House.

Zio Peppe, which means “Uncle Joe” in Italian, is in part a tribute to Cable’s uncle, Joe Sottosanti, who opened Tucson’s first Sicilian pizza place, Tesseo’s Pizzeria, nearly 50 years ago.

Did not like the appetizer of some kind of fried pasta. It had no stuffing and no flavor and was overpriced. We ordered the Birria pizza for two but we were only given one small bowl of Birria broth to dip our pizza in. I asked for another small bowl so we didn’t have to share our germs while double dipping and was told it would be another $2.00, after paying $25 for the pizza. The pizza was good and the cocktails were very good.

Everything was right. They seated us before the reservation time, immediately brought water and greeted us. Our server was perfect. She helped with my sister-in-laws food allergy needs. She didn’t write down the orders and everything was exactly right. The setting is wonderful. The food was outstanding. There were 5 of us saying wow in unison as we ate. We’re sorry we waited so long to try them.

Food was overpriced for the quality and did not come out hot. Was expecting fresh pasta but did not seem to be the case. Had high hopes for this place during our first visit to Tucson but felt disappointed.

This was a special night for the restaurant as it was a Valentines night dinner. The food was superb. Tables were spaced a bit too close for comfort,i.e. bumping into fellow diners when trying to get to your table or when leaving. Placed drink order and requested water, of which i had to ask about after we had been eating for a bit. Both water and drinks arrived shortly thereafter. Overall, the food more than made up for any of the negatives. Would do again.

Food is very well made and appealing. The salmon on polenta was very attractive and so delicious. Innovative dishes with interesting spice profiles. A joy to enjoy for a nice meal out.

The restaurant was very busy which was expected during the gem show, but we were seated immediately at our reserved table and greeted by a wonderful waitress who was pleasant and took great care of us. The food was delicious, the cocktails and wine selections excellent and our waitress was wonderful. Can’t wait to go back and try some of their other dishes.
