Dining and libations on Capitol Square with an incredible view of the Capitol, Rare combines craft cocktails, in-house dry aged steaks and attentive service in an unabashedly old-school steak house setting. Madison's downtown steakhouse features specialty cuts dry aged in-house, like the Rib Cap and the Delmonico as well as offering more traditional cuts like our filet and our rib eye. Rare is also one of the only purveyors of A5 Wagyu in Madison.

Complimenting our steaks and entrees is a specialty cocktail list and an extensive wine list with everything from wines for a big celebration to a weekday dinner.

If you're just looking for a drink after work, Rare offers discounted cocktails, wines and snacks at happy hour.

Excellent and professional service. Food was amazing and staff knowledgeable about the menu. Excellent cocktails and wine. It is expensive however if your looking for an upscale restaurant with amazing food and drinks and impeccable service, highly recommend.

We came to Rare for a birthday. It was exceptional from beginning to end! Our server was wonderful, and they really cater to the dining experience. The lobster bisque was phenomenal, I highly recommend it! The New York strip was seasoned to perfection and delicious on the outside and soft and tender on the inside, cooked perfectly. It’s absolutely worth the price. I look forward to dining at Rare again!

Elegant and exceptional, and truly enjoyable from beginning to end. It is so distinctly geared to accommodating guests for a truly pleasant dining experience. They are professional, and you can tell that they have a keen eye for delivering good service. What is not seen is the magic that must be going on in the kitchen, because the presentation of the food to our table was beautiful and every bite was unbelievable. The lobster bisque is to die for. The best ever. The steak cut like butter and was done to perfection and delivered a great taste. From cocktails to dessert, we were extremely pleased and cannot wait to come back. It is definitely obvious that there has been good training and management. Totally understand why they named it Rare.

It was a terrible experience. Do not sit at a table near the hallway to the kitchen. The wait staff speed walks constantly like passengers trying to make it to the gate of an airport. Wait staff knocked into my chair no simple excuse me. The steak was laden with fat and not cooked to specifications. So many tables in nicer sections but we are seated to make it easier for the restaurant. There are much better options in town. I will not return.

Bread wasn’t served until we asked. We were charged for an appetizer we never ordered. Entrees told a very long time to come out. The asparagus was of poor quality.
