Dining and libations on Capitol Square with an incredible view of the Capitol, Rare combines craft cocktails, in-house dry aged steaks and attentive service in an unabashedly old-school steak house setting. Madison's downtown steakhouse features specialty cuts dry aged in-house, like the Rib Cap and the Delmonico as well as offering more traditional cuts like our filet and our rib eye. Rare is also one of the only purveyors of A5 Wagyu in Madison.

Complimenting our steaks and entrees is a specialty cocktail list and an extensive wine list with everything from wines for a big celebration to a weekday dinner.

If you're just looking for a drink after work, Rare offers discounted cocktails, wines and snacks at happy hour.

Beautiful place as per normal. My steak was not the best, won’t get the NY Strip again but the others enjoyed theirs.

We were here NYE to celebrate a wedding anniversary, we sat in the library. Overall the ambiance is nice but the service and food is average. You are not getting what you pay for, which is unfortunate. Overall, it’s about the experience…and they do not deliver. We booked weeks in advance, called a day ahead to even confirm things were good to go. In the end my husband and I felt as if the manager was just trying to brush it over. I wouldn’t recommend this place for people coming in from out of town or celebrating a nice evening, this just missed the mark.

Our meal was excellent and the service was great. It was quite dim in the restaurant and without a small lamp or something like that on the table my parents had to use their phones to read the menus. It was not too loud which was nice and the meal did not feel rushed. The wedge salad was to die for and the steak/scallop special was mouth watering.

Food was ok but, for the price, it should have been stellar. The ribeye was not very well seasoned and the lobster mac was a bit gluey. Service was ok - waitress was a bit overbearing. I was very disappointed that they no longer serve the popovers. Overall, I would more than likely go to another steakhouse over Rare.

Outstanding service, food quality, meat cuts are justo great , one of the best I ever had , place is just great ambient. Location just in front of the Madison capitol building 👍 Highly recommended It’s a must if you stay in Madison WI

Very good diner. Somewhat pricey but we knew that ahead of going to the restaurant. Very busy for a Tuesday evening, the vibe was upbeat.

Food was very overpriced for the amount you got and the taste. Could have made a steak at home that was better and not charred. Waiter wore a mask and was hard to hear and understand. Nice atmosphere and wine was delicious.
