Scalini Fedeli was opened by chef-owner Michael Cetrulo in 1995 and very quickly became New Jersey's highest rated Italian restaurant. Rated excellent by the New York Times in 1996 and New Jersey's favorite restaurant in Zagat's Survey in 2001 and New Jersey Monthly's best Italian and top 25 overall in 2007. Highlights from the menu include soft egg yolk raviolo with black truffle butter, pignoli crusted salmon with artichoke and mint agnolotti in a light tomato and basil broth and braised short ribs of beef with a cherry pepper and port glaze. Set in an historic building built in 1740, the atmosphere is slightly formal with Tuscan style vaulted ceilings finished with Venetian plaster. Tapestry and antique mirrors adorn the walls.

This was a fantastic dining experience at one of our favorite restaurants in New Jersey. We’ve been coming for 20+ years, the dining room is beautiful , with a gorgeous European vaulted ceiling , the food and service are always exceptional.

Food was good but not amazing. The service sorely needs an upgrade. Waiter never came back to ask how our meals were, we had to pour our own wine, and never asked us about after dinner drinks or coffee/tea. The woman coming around with the bread tray/water was more on her game. Should have left the tip for her instead. One and done for this girl. Will not return.

Our family use to dine at this restaurant every week years ago. We recently moved back to the area and were excited to return. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. We felt that the bread was of poor quality as was the butter. It was not a quality bread. The beet and goat cheese salad had too much salt in it and the dressing was overall not very good. The salmon was overpowered by its sauce. For dessert we ordered the chocolate soufflé. It was a soufflé in name only. It was dense and heavy and was not a soufflé. The coffee was cold. Overall, in my opinion a mediocre to poor showing.

This was our first visit to Scalini Fedeli in a couple of years, but probably the 10th time we have visited overall. The ambience and service remain absolutely top notch and the food was exceptional, with just one unfortunate dish (a duck special where the duck was gamey and possibly bad, for which without hesitation the restaurant offered to remove the charge). We will certainly return.

While I know this is a mainstay in Chatham, we had a very poor experience here recently. We ordered a bottle of wine and not once, but twice, they brought the same wine, but wrong vintage to the table trying to pass it off as what we ordered (basically serving us a less expensive wine but having us pay the price of what was on the menu). My husband noticed this twice and refused the bottles and suggested that they adjust the price to reflect what was being provided. They refused. Poor customer service and frankly pretty shady! Food is ok. Appetizers and pasta are good. But the main dishes are mediocre and you are forced to order one (only pre-fixe is available). Decor is terribly dated. They need to rethink their menu (forced pre-fixe and too many options) and should consider a renovation. With so many options in the area, Eataly, Serenade, Felina, etc we won’t be returning.

The food was fantastic. Unfortunately the service did not match. They were rushing and service was terrible. They brought the next course before they cleared the plates from the previous course. It felt like they were throwing the food on the table and then running away. Then they cleared before my wife finished her plate. Did not even ask. Just took her plate away. It’s unfortunate because the food was truly delicious. Everything we had was flavorful. Definitely recommend for the food.
