To begin, let me tell you that I lived in Germany for 8 years and have traveled there regularly since. I have eaten at everything from the smallest Imbiss to the largest beer halls to white-tablecloth restaurants and everything in between. I have eaten at Spatenhaus on der Oper several times and returned last night because we've always enjoyed it. NOT ANYMORE. First off, I specifically reserved the downstairs since I know the upstairs is more up-scale, and we were not going to be dressed appropriately. Somehow, my Open Table reservation got changed to the upper level. Fortunately, I noticed it in time to reverse it. Arrived and approached the host's station, told the first gentleman who approached we had a reservation. He looked at the monitor, called another man over, and said our name with a bit of disgust. The second man tooked us over (we both had on nice sweaters and dark pants), flipped his hand to a nearby table as if to say, "let the peasants sit there". His disdain was evident, we were given a table with no reserved sign on it, which led me to believe it was "reserved" for Americans. Gave us the English menu, would have preferrerd the German one, oh well, Server took her time getting to us, breath reeked of beer, maybe she'd spilled on herself, but I believe she'd been sampling. She took our drink order and then sneered, "Well?" We asked her to return after we had decided on what we wanted, gave us a dirty look and huffed off. Left our drinks + disappeared. Finally returned, we ordered. My meal was poorly presented, frankly tasteless. Spargel with a small schnitzel. COLD potatoes, Hollandaise sauce that required me to break through the film on the top. UGH. Myy partner's meal was mostly ok, but the Kartoffelsalat had a gray tinge to it and tasted weird. He had finished his beer before his meal, and she was no where to be found. Finally came back, 10 minutes to bring his beer, disappeared before I could ask for another glass of wine. We will not return.

This goes especially for causing the impression that you may not have been welcome because of "not ... to be dressed appropriately". We can also assure you that - even if politics and media imply worse, we do not have "tables reserved for Americans". All guests are welcome in our restaurants. Your visit tro our restaurant seems to have gone in the wrong direction from the first moment on, and we truly apologize for our part in that sad event. Best wishes from the Spatenhaus an der Oper
