Staff was comletely charming. Menu well judged though on a Sunday they had nearly sold out of fish. Everything plated up beautifully. The portion sizes underwhelmed us. One carrot, a v small portion of chard, two finely cut slices of beef set on a red cabbage puree and 3 v large roast potatoes. That was the Sunday Roast I chose. i think if the portions were bigger I would be giving a much more positive review. The terrine starter was one of the best I have had. The meringue dessert with rhubarb and orange was delicious. Look, if the meal had been more plentiful I would be giving top marks. Sorry, I am not giving a better review. I enjoyed it though. Thank you. Will I book again? I am not sure.

Upstairs restaurant is functional, but not particularly characterful. The food was consistently excellent: starters of scallops - served in butter in a large scallop shell otherwise unadorned, and the shell itself sitting on a bed of dried corn (for decoration only), but perfectly cooked and flavoursome. Anchovies with excellent and when eaten with bread and cured butter were very indulgent. The mains of venison and lamb rump were both perfectly cooked, tender and full flavoured. Puddings were a mixture of the traditional and some with a more creative twist. The crème brûlée and a spiced rhubarb and blood orange pavlova that we chose didn't disappoint. Service was friendly and attentive, albeit that the server was perhaps not overly familiar with some of the details of the menu and drinks list. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

As a local who’s eaten and traveled various places, I can say Chequers was a joy to experience. Perfect Sunday roast with a great wine list that doesn’t cost the earth.

Amazing venison. Scallops were great but small portion. More of a bite than a starter. Quiet and quaint with tasty food
