Located in the Old Engine House on the edge of York's Museum Gardens in a riverside setting close to the historic Lendal Bridge, The Star Inn The City has an enviable position, which we aim to match with the best produce God's Own Country has to offer and genuine Yorkshire hospitality for the 'whole package'.

We offer an all day menu which can be enjoyed for both lunch and dinner, as well as serving up breakfast Friday to Sunday, and on Sunday's we serve up our famous Sunday roasts between 12-4pm.

We pride ourselves on being a a food-led celebration destination, with guests being able to enjoy view of the River Ouse from our Garden Room or outside on our riverside terrace. For more intimate occasions we also offer two exclusive Private Dining rooms for celebrations such as graduations, weddings and birthdays.

Food okay service terrible we were greeted abruptly by the lady when we arrived & my husband asked for some sauce with his meal arrived when he had finished always had good service before but tonight was terrible will not be rushing back

Service was very good , the leek and potato gratin was watery , the cost was taken of the bill, the haggis Bon Bon and sauce was not what was expected a trip north of the border may be needed to check out the real Bon Bon’s

The food was excellent (it's nice to see a place that means it when the menu says proper chips!). The service was top notch, we weren't waiting long for anything. Great experience.

Love this place, dined as a group of friends in January. Lovely staff, we were taken care of in a warm and efficient way. Food was delightful- looking forward to the next new menu.

Overall a good experience at the Star Inn, cold windy night in York in January, restaurant was understandably very quiet. Service was very strong, Kian the server was excellent, welcoming and understanding. Thanks. Starter was brilliant, a celeriac soup, the mustard seeds and cream gave it great texture and was a lovely start. The main was underwhelming, one of the evenings specials that was anything but. A crime against great produce, the Yorkshire Pheasant was rough chopped and overcooked, looking like some 3am mystery meat. Served over a mountain of very consistent and impressive brunoise vegetable medley. Beetroot salad was delicious and textured. I would definitely recommend The Star, great value, better service, just think I missed them at there best tonight or chose the wrong main.

Read good things about this restaurant so decided to travel down to York for lunch for my wife's birthday - and we were not disappointed. Lovely setting by the river. Very friendly staff on arrival and during service. The food was great - we both loved the scallops with squid ink risotto, and the pheasant (me) and chicken (my wife) were both delicious. And my wife was given a little birthday treat to finish off the meal. Would also recommend the Balfour Nanette rose wine from Kent - apparently not so popular with diners, but it should be! All in all, a memorable meal. It's not easy to find places which offer their a la carte menu at lunchtimes, so well done to The Star Inn The City.
